Project number thirteen: frozen sunlight behind the charlottenburger schloß This was created on the pond that lies behind the charlottenburger palace in berlin.  The pond lies in a very pleasant park which I happened to be visiting with my daughter in the afternoon.  I had suspected that there would be more than enough ice to work with, so I had brought along a hammer and a chisel.  A handful...

Project number twelve: throwing snowballs at a wall can be therapeutic i should have people pay me lots of money to give them the chance to throw five hundred snowballs at a wall. throwing five hundred snowballs at their boss, or at least at an effigy of their boss would probably be more motivating, but throwing snowballs at a wall is surprisingly satisfying in and of itself.

Project number ten: red letter day i’ve used scarlet oak leaves stuck on to plane trees several times before, but never in this fashion.  i like the endless possibilities, and that leaves looks like some letters from a foreign alphabet. art should be dialog.  i used to think that ‘real’ artists created art for no other purpose than to get rid of the ideas that happened to be...

Project number nine: working with the wind i created this in lehnin, during a pumpkin festival last fall.  john barry, a friend of mine took the photos while i blew the leaves through a pipe. this is the first time that i worked directly with the wind.  its something i have been meaning to do for quite some time, so although i’m not altogether satisfied with how these pictures came out...

Project number eight: havelschlange the havel is a large body of water west of berlin.  ’schlange’ is german for snake. created this one one misty morning while marin was fishing in the havel. he didn’t catch anything, and at the time i was disappointed with the outcome, but time heals all wounds, and i quite like it now. it is made of pine branches.

rules update its been ages (two months) since i last updated this blog, and i was actually planning to make it a weekly affair, so i’m changing some of the rules i specified at the beginning of this project, namely i will continue to offer pictures on auction here, but if they don’t sell, they will go on sale at my shop on etsy forever, or until some etsy buyer decides to buy my...

Project number seven: needleflower This project wouldn’t have happened if a certain etsy user called vintology wouldn’t have insisted that i create a new piece of artwork for a relative of hers.  She liked the philosophy behind project water me!!!  -I suggested sending the recent work i did while on leave in kasachstan, but she was having none of it… Which was, of course,...

Project number five: scarlet oak zigzag Actually this is not a new project, but its new on the web, and that’s what counts in my books. The red leave segments are stuck to the bottom of the yellow linden leaves with spittle. The whole thing took less than half an hour, and I remember that I made it while I was taking my daughter for a walk in the pram, so she was sleeping next to me...

Project Number Four: Growthrings Lehnin This wasn’t sold on ebay, but to someone on etsy in england.  This is a project i’ve had on my mind for a while now, which makes it just the opposite of my previous project, which was completely spontaneous, taking about 20 minutes from conception to completion. The picture below shows how I cut up an old dead tree with a chainsaw, split the...

Project Number Three: Iris leaf meander Lehnin This is the first project i’ve have sold on ebay. It went to shauna-misik from canada. My current listing can be found here. I made this by slicing a sliver off an iris leaf, and weaving it through slots I had torn into another leaf. The iris grows on the edge of the Klostersee lake in Lehnin, Germany.

Project Number Two: Green oak leaf zigzag number two sorry about the title. i like how the chestnut leaves look. i’ve been wanting to do a piece with chestnut leaves for the longest time. this, my second project hasn’t been contracted either, but hell, i’m gonna post it anyway. its been an incredibly productive spring for me, and so i think that the most appropriate...

Project Number One: Green oak leaf zigzag Nobody contracted this work so I’m dedicating it to my one and only nephew Erastus Clement (no he doesn’t have his own website yet) who happens to have his birthday 2 days after mine, at the beginning of this month. These are pieces of scarlet oak leaves stuck together with spit and hung onto the grass stems at about half past six in the...

water me A friend of mine showed me a comic book that an artist friend of his had drawn while spending a year in Tokyo. The book is well written and funny, what would be called “sehr unterhaltsam” in this country, but above all it is the idea that makes it so special. Dirk Schwieger, the author, let people send him ideas of things to do in Tokyo, and then went and did them,...
